Zelkova Kuruma-dansu (Antique Elm Tansu)

3,250.00

A beautiful example in great condition.  This piece will provide a show stopping presentation for decades to come while providing valuable storage.  The gorgeous wood grain and rich color is from Elm ( Kelcova) and the body is a lighter weight kiri wood.   The ironwork is hammered (repousse) with decorative flower cut outs.  The sliding doors can be removed if you wish to display objects or it can be locked thanks to a clever iron hinge design that is hidden to the eye.

Tansu's were popular storage containers in late Edo and Meiji period Japan.    There were tansu's for every use: for kitchen storage, clothing, swords, tea, etc.  For the most part tansu's were simple in design and choice of material  - the Japanese did not believe in ostentatious home design - the more simple and understated the better.
